The quick answer
You check whether ChatGPT recommends your business by opening ChatGPT and asking it the exact question a buyer would ask, using your category and your city rather than your business name, then reading whether your business shows up in the answer it gives back. Run that a few different ways before you trust the result. One lucky hit does not mean much, and one miss does not mean you are truly invisible either. You need a pattern before you act on it.
Step 1: Ask like a buyer, not like an owner
Do not type your company name into ChatGPT and ask what it knows about you. That question tells you almost nothing, because ChatGPT can describe a business it would never actually recommend. It also does not help to ask a leading question like "is [your business] the best choice for [service]," since that primes the answer instead of testing it. Ask the question a stranger types when they do not yet know you exist: the service you provide plus the place you provide it. Something closer to "who handles [service] in [city]" or "best [trade] near [neighborhood]" is what a real buyer actually asks.
Step 2: Run it several ways before you conclude anything
One prompt is not a test, it is a coin flip. Ask the same core question four or five ways. Swap "best" for "affordable" or "highly rated." Add a nearby landmark. Try it with your city name and without. If your business shows up across most of those variations, that is a real signal. If it shows up once and disappears the next four times, treat that as not showing up.
Step 3: Read the answer for three things
Check whether your business is named at all. If ChatGPT lists competitors in your category and skips you, that is the whole finding.
If you are named, check how you are described. ChatGPT is summarizing what it found about you elsewhere online, so a vague or outdated description points to a gap on your own pages, not a glitch in the tool.
Check who got named instead of you. Those businesses are rarely better than you. They are usually just easier for ChatGPT to find clear, consistent information about.
Write down what you find, question by question and answer by answer, with the date. A one-time check tells you where you stand today. A dated log is what lets you tell, months from now, whether the work you put in actually moved the needle.
Step 4: Check it again next month
The answer ChatGPT gives today is not fixed. It shifts as the model updates and as the web underneath it changes. A business that is not named this week can earn the citation once its pages, listings, and structured data give ChatGPT something clear to trust. Running the same check again in a month tells you whether that gap is closing or holding steady.
Why some businesses get named and others do not
ChatGPT does not rank ten links and let the buyer pick. It builds one answer from sources it trusts, and it tends to trust businesses whose online footprint is plain and consistent: a page that states up top what you do and where, structured data that spells that out in a format the assistant reads directly, and the same name, address, and phone everywhere it looks. Recency counts too. A site that has not changed in a long while reads as quiet or closed; one with steady, current activity reads as a real, operating business. None of this depends on how large you are. A small, single-location business with a clear and current online footprint can out-earn a bigger competitor who never bothered to clean theirs up.
This is the discipline behind Answer Engine Optimization, and it explains why some businesses never get named at all even when they are the better option on the ground.
See where you stand
The manual check above works, but running it by hand across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI, several ways each, takes real time, and you are still left guessing what to fix. The free audit runs that same check across all four engines and shows you exactly where your business is missing and why. A real person reviews the results before anything comes back to you. Start with the AI visibility audit to see where your business stands today.
