What is an AI visibility score and how do I improve it?

A plain-language breakdown of what AI answer engines score you on, and the fixes that actually move the number.

What an AI visibility score actually measures

An AI visibility score measures how often, how accurately, and how favorably an AI answer engine (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI) mentions your business when someone asks a buying question in your category. It is not one number pulled from a single test. It is a composite: does the AI mention you at all, does it get the facts right, where do you land in the answer, and does the framing lean positive.

Think of it as a report card for how AI systems currently describe your business to the people asking them for a recommendation.

Why it is not the same as a search ranking

A search ranking measures your position on a results page. An AI visibility score measures something different: whether you exist inside the answer at all. A prospect asking an AI assistant "who is the best option near me" never sees ten blue links. They see one paragraph, maybe three names. If your business is not one of those names, your old search ranking does not matter, because the buyer never scrolled past the AI's answer to find you.

This is the shift behind answer engine optimization: optimizing for the answer itself, not just the page underneath it.

The building blocks of the score

A useful AI visibility score breaks into a few parts:

  • Presence. Are you mentioned at all, across the common questions a buyer would ask.
  • Accuracy. When you are mentioned, is the information correct: services, location, hours, specialty.
  • Position. Are you the first name offered, or an afterthought listed behind competitors.
  • Sentiment. Is the framing positive, neutral, or negative.
  • Consistency. Do you get the same answer across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI, or does your business disappear on one engine while showing up on another.

Weak performance on any one of these drags the whole score down, even when the rest look fine.

Why this happens to good businesses

AI answer engines build their answers from what has already been published about a business: your own site, directories, review platforms, local citations, and third-party mentions. If that material is thin, outdated, inconsistent across listings, or never structured in a way a machine can extract cleanly, the AI has little to work with. It either skips you or guesses, and a wrong guess (an old address, a discontinued service, a competitor's name in your slot) does more damage than staying invisible.

This is also why some genuinely well-run businesses never get named even when they would be a strong recommendation. It is rarely a quality problem. It is a visibility problem.

How to improve your AI visibility score

Improving an AI visibility score comes down to giving AI systems clear, accurate, consistent material to work from:

  1. Fix the facts everywhere at once. Your name, services, location, and hours should read identically on your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that lists you.
  2. Answer the exact questions buyers ask. Write plain-language pages that state directly what you do, who you serve, and what sets you apart, in sentences an AI can lift and quote.
  3. Close the gaps competitors are filling. If a rival shows up for a question you should own, that gap is fixable with the right page or listing update.
  4. Structure content so machines can parse it. Clear headings, direct answers, and organized information help both search engines and AI answer engines pull your details correctly.
  5. Recheck on a schedule. AI answers shift as the underlying data changes. A score is a snapshot, not a one-time fix.

None of this is a trick to game the system. It is the same discipline as good customer communication: say clearly what you do, keep it accurate, and keep it current everywhere a buyer or an AI might look.

See where you stand

You cannot improve a score you have not measured. The free AI visibility audit shows how your business appears across the major AI answer engines today, where the gaps are, and what is worth fixing first. A real person reviews the results before anything is handed back to you, so what you get is a clear plan, not a raw data dump. Start with a free audit and see exactly where you stand.
