What is SEO, and how do San Antonio businesses actually rank?

What SEO actually is

Search engine optimization is the work of making your website the result Google trusts enough to show first when someone searches for what you sell. It is not a trick or a one-time setup. It is an ongoing discipline across three areas: the technical health of your site, the content on your pages, and the authority other sites lend you.

Most San Antonio businesses are not losing rankings because of one big mistake. They lose on a hundred small ones: slow pages, missing titles, thin content, and a site built to look good rather than to be found.

The three buckets that move rankings

Technical SEO. Can Google crawl and read your site quickly. Page speed, mobile layout, clean structure, no broken links, and schema markup that tells search engines what each page is. If the foundation is shaky, nothing above it ranks.

On-page SEO. Does each page answer a specific question a buyer is actually typing. Titles, headings, and copy written for how people search, with one clear topic per page instead of one page trying to be everything.

Authority. Do other credible sites and local directories point to you with a consistent name, address, and phone. Google reads that consistency as proof you are a real, established business.

Where local sites lose the most ground

The pattern we see most often: a good-looking site with no titles, no schema, and copy that never names the service plus the city a buyer would search. The fix is rarely a rebuild. It is usually disciplined cleanup, page by page, on a cadence.

SEO is one of four surfaces

Ranking on the classic Google results is necessary, but it is no longer the whole game. Buyers now also ask AI assistants, read AI-generated summaries, and search the local map. Those are three more surfaces: AEO, GEO, and the local map pack, each with its own rules.
